ROUEN TO BAYEUX

Saturday, 11 June.

We left Rouen in the morning for Bayeux, stopping encounter at the ruins of Jumieges Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Normandy.  Founded in 654, Philbert was its first abbot. As the abbey prospered, it soon numbered nearly a thousand monks. Pillaged, as was most everything, by the Vikings, it was rebuilt, enlarged and restored over the centuries. The French Revolution ended its existence as a monastery, leaving only impressive ruins. A beautiful and haunting place.

After lunch, we traveled through the beautiful French countryside to Bayeux, a lovely little town where we are staying at the Hotel le Lion D'Or. Our room is the best yet, actually a suite! And we ate at an elegant restaurant where everything had been pre-ordered, and it was our best meal to date.
