Heidelberg is a charming university (since the 14th century) town. The ruins of a partially restored Heidelberg Castle stands high on Konigstuhl Hill, with sweeping views of the Neckar River. Heidelberg Library is the oldest in Germany, founded in 1421. Frederick III commissioned the Heidelberg Cathechism, whose aim was to counteract the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
A Shakespeare play was being rehearsed while we were on our tour; they are presented throughout the summer.
After the castle visit, we took the Funicular (vertical tram) to the old town. A lot of shops, cafes, the university, etc. are located there, and it is a beautiful place to walk and absorb the culture.
For those of you who have not been educated by Jim Huffstutler, during the Reformation many Protestant churches removed their steeple crosses and replaced them with roosters to proclaim a new day in religious freedom. We are seeing many of them!
Nice pics!
