ROUEN, DAY 2: JEANNE D'ARC

Thursday, 9 June.

Breakfast in the hotel is set up in the Tea Room, and is an abundant buffet: tea, coffee, juice, milk, baguettes, croissants, pain du chocolat, other kinds of bread, several cheeses and meats, wrapped Hostess goodies, candies, yogurt, jams, granola and other dry cereal, hard-boiled eggs, figs, kiwis, bananas, pears, apples, Nutella, etc., etc.

Charlie the hotel cat follows us around everywhere in the hotel. A sweetie.

We walked to the Rouen Cathedral, Notre Dame, for our pilgrim commissioning ceremony. We were each given a pendant with a labyrinth charm to symbolize our pilgrimage, and also heard scripture and sang Taize.

A guide led us through Rouen Cathedral, which was heavily damaged in World War II, but has been, and it's still being, restored. We saw some young pilgrims from a local school, as well. The tour continued around Rouen, and ended at the place where Jeanne D'arc was burned at the stake. A church has been built on the site.

In the afternoon we visited the Historial, which tells the story of Jeanne D'Arc, and in the evening, our staff presented a short play that takes place during her trial. Transcripts were saved from that time, so we know a lot about her trial. Susan Shay, one of our leaders, had written the play. It was very good!

The day ended with dinner at a creperie, pommeau (apple aperitif) and dessert.
